Skin health- basic advice for everyone

#dermeducation
For everyone.
Except in a few cases.. it is generally recommended to use mild toilet soaps to bath. Not antibacterial, antiseptic or medicated.

Stop mixing triple action creams with your body cream. These creams have NO benefit whatsoever. I wrote a thread about them a while back.

Take care of your hands….one of the most frequently used parts of the body. It tends to show signs of aging quickly if you don’t. It will be nice to have a moisturising hand cream handy especially after doing anything involving water.

The skin has a very good reparative ability. That means most of the rashes/lesions that come up sporadically will usually be taken care of if you take care of your skin the proper way. And how do you do that? By moisturising the skin liberally. Moisturize just means hydrating the skin to lock moisture in. An ointment like vaseline or shea butter or any moisturizing body cream.

The effect of the sun causes what is called photoaging (aging of the skin due to the sun). If you compare a person that has been using sunscreen for years to a person that has never used…you’ll appreciate the diffeence clearly. Sunscreens are of two types; physical or chemical.

A lot of people here in Nigeria actually inadvertently bleach their skin. They ask at their local store what they can use to ‘maintain’ the skin. They are then given something that will ‘maintain’ it lightly. Unfortunately most of these creams are bleaching creams. And they come in different names…Puretone, white and clear, clear and glossy, Tonewell, fair and glow. All these are just semantics. And as a rule, most of these creams are usually white and orange or pink and white…lol.

If you have something on your skin and you don’t know what it is, you’re better off moisturising till you get to someone that knows. Don’t be in a hurry to buy over the counter medications. Children have a large body surface area and absorb anything you put on their skin faster, with more risk of systemic side effects. Be careful what you put on their skin.

And lastly…eat well, lots of water, fruits and vegetables along with exercise. (Cliché…I know. But its true). Avoid excessive sun exposure.

Remember….it is very easy to damage the skin. But repairing it may become a Herculean task. The skin you have in your teenage years up to your twenties and thirties is your God given one. The one you beyond that is a reflection of how well you took care of your skin prior to that.
