For doctors – open your eyes

For doctors. By a doctor.
It is animal nature generally to desire companionship. And we all know man is also a higher animal. This is why despite all the negative stories about marriage and love out there, more people are still getting married. People are still craving relationships and as old ones are breaking, new ones are being formed. So we can say being in a romantic relationship is a normal part of human life.

Medicine is hard enough as a specialty. Heck…life can get hard sometimes. That is why you should try not to saddle yourself with relationships that drain you. Be it friendship or a romantic one. Dear colleague, the more your positive relationships, the easier your life becomes. In your quest for a partner, do not close your eyes to all the subtle signs. When you are falling in love, try not to leave your head behind. The signs are usually there most times except you’re lying to yourself. Anything that is a major deal breaker for you should be looked out for. People only change if they really want to.

I had someone that got a residency slot and did not take it because her husband felt she wouldn’t have time to take care of the homefront. Another case was of a relationship where the lady was the toxic one and the husband couldn’t concentrate at work again and he kept on making mistakes. For most people, major issues at home often reduce productivity at work.
Medicine is a jealous lover especially when you’re just getting settled. Be very deliberate in your relationships else you may undergo assisted self destruction by your choices.

Know one thing…love is never unkind. When they tell you “I love you” but they always treat you bad…that is far from love. Love is anything but selfish. When they tell you “I love you” but all they do is take and never give (and I’m not talking materially only)….that is far from what love is. Open your eyes and see the light today. You need sanity in your personal life to complement your professional one. Trust me on this, that it makes life much easier to navigate. In your quest for that companionship, do not end up with someone that will make your life a living hell. And if you have made that mistake….have the courage to retrace your steps and opt out. Far better to be alone than be in a relationship that drains you holistically.
