Hello there! I’m Shakirat Gold-Olufadi, the author of this blog skinandall. I am also a consultant physician, dermatologist and genitourinary medicine specialist. Quite a mouthful…right? That’s just because dermatologists are special people. I started this blog because I enjoy writing (and because world people aka my family and friends both on and off social media encouraged me to bring my writing to a larger audience… so I let them ‘get’ me). In a country of about 170 million people, there are still less than 200 dermatologists who have completed their training. Most of these dermatologists are also in the bigger cities (Who no like better thing?) and some states in Nigeria don’t even have any dermatologist! Doing the maths…that’s like 1 dermatologist to 850,000 people! Shocking isn’t it? Dermatology is also one specialty that most other doctors are also not comfortable with because it looks like voodoo. There is a dearth of knowledge both on the part of non-dermatologist doctors and the general public and it became imperative to have a platform to sensitize, educate and enlighten about the largest organ in the body. The skin may also be a reflection of other internal organs so it is important to pay attention to it. Unfortunately, the black skin does not have as much information out there like the Caucasian skin so going on Dr. Google does not solve the problem most times. The internet has made the world a global village and information can go beyond borders through this medium. There are also a lot of ‘my colleagues’ out there who have neither had a medical nor a dermatology training preying on people’s gullibility and damaging their skin. A lot of family and friends have also conferred a fellowship of dermatology on themselves; I call them dermatologists without fellowship😊. Skinandall is also not just about the skin….we would be chipping in other health education tips (so that other specialties are not neglected) life lessons, relationship talk, mentoring and of course humour. What’s life without some laughter? It would be an interactive blog but please note that it is not for consultation, diagnosis or management of skin conditions and other health related issues.
